Your seasonal guide to entertaining at home
There’s no better time than spring to give your outdoor spaces a lift. While the days slowly get longer and warmer your patio once again becomes the perfect place to entertain, relax and soak up the season. A fresh coat of Resene paint or wood stain can completely transform tired furniture, walls and decking, setting you up for the summer evenings ahead. From crisp white, moody dark, bursts of playful colour and even globally inspired, here’s how to create an exterior look that feels new and inviting.
Alfresco amigo
This fun, fiesta style outdoor space has textured walls in Resene Sandtex in Resene Sand and flooring in Resene Non-Skid Deck and Path matched to Resene Piha Sand. We’ve added bursts of joyful hues with chairs in Resene Mexican Red and Resene Buttercup, table legs in Resene Paris White, tabletop stained in Resene Whitewash with runner pattern hand painted in Resene Teal Blue, Resene Sunrise, Resene Bloom and Resene Blackberry and bowl in Resene Frozen. Jug and candle sticks from Maison Balzac, fruit candles from Nonnas Grocer, glasses from Les Ottomans and candleholder from Broste Copenhagen. Project by Katrina Hobbs, runner artwork by Hannah Tapner, image by Bryce Carleton.
This fiesta-inspired outdoor space just sings of celebration. You can almost hear the music, the ice cubes clinking in glasses and the sound of laughter from loved ones. These colour choices create a space that feels festive from day to night, just add some festoon lights to brighten the space in the evening.
Here, we’ve hand-painted our own table runner to add some colour and flair to the space, it also enhances the fiesta style design. It’s an affordable way to add a personal touch to your patio, just grab some Resene testpots in colours like Resene Mexican Red, Resene Sunrise, Resene Teal Blue and Resene Turbo, and get creative!
Tip: For extra texture and interest outdoors, use Resene Sandtex. Or lookout for Resene’s soon to be released MyArtisan Foundation coat which has a softer textured finish that is easily applied and combined with other MyArtisan effects paints to achieve a myriad of unique finishes. These versatile textured finishes can disguise minor imperfections on concrete, brick or plaster while giving your patio walls a softly brushed, natural look that works beautifully in sunny spaces.
Bright and fresh
In this crisp outdoor space, the wall and table are painted in Resene Albescent White, floor and seat in Resene Sorrell Brown and plant pots in Resene Albescent White and Resene Grain Brown. Cushions from Bed Bath and Beyond. Project by Melle Van Sambeek, image by Bryce Carleton.
White isn’t for everyone, but it’s one of those shades that never goes out of style, and means you can change things up with décor and furniture as your tastes or the seasons change. In this space, we’ve gone for a timeless neutral look with some added warmth of Resene Sorrell Brown on the floor and furniture. You could also get this same feel with a warm wood stain like Resene Woodsman Uluru or Resene Woodsman Heartwood. Pait this with whites like Resene Merino or Resene Eighth Spanish White, along with climbing vines, lush plants and an outdoor rug for some texture and freshness.
Tip: Use Resene Walk-on in your chosen colour. If your patio gets slippery when wet, use Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.
Golden glow
Create a warm space all year round with layers of warm creams and beige. This rear batten wall is painted in Resene Half Putty, trellis wall and table in Resene Triple Pearl Lusta, decking stained in Resene Woodsman Uluru, planter and hooks in Resene Bullwhip and chair painted in Resene Teak. Plant from Adairs, cushion and chair from H&M Home, light from Lighting Direct, throw and tumbler from Kmart. Project by Vanessa Nouwens, image by Bryce Carleton.
This toasty palette suits a coastal home, where the tones reflect the surrounding environment of golden sands and dunes. Although it’s also a great way to bring some summer warmth to any location. Warm hues like Resene Half Putty are welcoming and inviting, so much so that you’ll find you want to spend all your time on your new patio! Try Resene Noosa and Resene Quarter Spanish White paired with a sun-kissed deck stained in Resene Woodsman Uluru. Add some plants for a touch of lush spring greenery.
Tip:Add Resene Hot Weather Additive to your Resene waterborne paint when you’re painting in the heat. It will slow down the dry time, giving you more time to get a quality finish.
Spice of life
In this Moroccan-inspired space, the walls are painted in Resene Apple Blossom with Resene FX Paint Effects Medium mixed with Resene Quarter Solitaire on top, stars on the bottom of the wall in Resene Solitaire, tabletop stained in Resene Woodsman Bark with star border sponged in Resene Manhattan, breeze blocks in Resene Mocha, large pots in Resene Cinnamon and Resene Mocha, lanterns in Resene FX Faux Rust Effect, decking stained in Resene Woodsman Tiri and trays in Resene Burgundy and Resene Cinnamon. Floor cushions from Yuva. Project by Melle van Sambeek, image by Bryce Carleton.
The change of seasons is also the perfect time to infuse your outdoor area with a little global inspiration. In this case, we’ve gone for a little Moroccan magic. Hues like Resene Burgundy and Resene Cinnamon transport you to a serene Moroccan courtyard. Small spaces are often embraced in Moroccan design, the cosier the better! Patterned surfaces, plenty of layered textiles and low seating or cushions work particularly well for an intimate courtyard space. Touches of vibrant blue, like Resene Mariner, or orange toned yellow, like Resene Buttercup, would also work great in this theme.
Tip:If you’ve got an inspiration picture or moodboard, use the Resene ColorMatch tool online. This colour-matching tool allows you to select a picture, from a web page or from your own uploaded image and it will match your chosen colour in the image to a similar Resene paint colour. Turn your inspiration into a real life design!
Cosy nook
These dark and cosy porch walls are stained in Resene Woodsman Crowshead with battens in Resene Woodsman Pickled Bean, tray and plant pots painted in Resene Paddock, table and chairs in Resene Element, and floor in Resene Walk-on in Resene Gunsmoke topcoated in Resene Quarter Concrete and Resene Bokara Grey with Resene FX Paint Effects Medium, then clear coated using Resene Concrete Wax. Cushions from Mitre 10. Project by Melle Van Sambeek, image by Bryce Carleton.
Create a cosy porch and exterior space that you can use all year round. Darker palettes create a refined design with less glare in summer, and in winter they offer a cosy and cocooning nook to hide away in – just don’t forget a blanket or outdoor heater! Try a deep stain like Resene Woodsman Crowshead, which works beautifully against other ginger-toned stains like Resene Woodsman Pickled Bean. Or you can also try a darker paint colour like Resene Tuna or Resene Charcoal.
Add interest to your patio floor like ours. We’ve created a concrete-like effect with Resene Walk-on in Resene Gunsmoke topcoated in Resene Quarter Concrete and Resene Bokara Grey with Resene FX Paint Effects Medium. Note: If using Resene FX Paint Effects Medium on flooring, you’ll need two coats of either a 2K topcoat, like Resene Uracryl 400 series urethane, or a topcoat of Resene Concrete Wax.
Tip:Use the Resene CoolColour version when using a dark-coloured stain or paint to protect your home and furniture from heat damage.
Garden magic
Add a pop of colour to your garden with a painted arch. (Left) Winner of Resene’s Garden Glow Up competition, homeowner Chris and her husband transformed their garden into a Japanese-inspired sanctuary including an arch painted in Resene Rock N Roll and Resene FX Metallic Gold. (Right) Amy’s Villaleigh Gardens and Nursery draws in visitors with its abundant flowers and vivid hues like Resene St Tropaz on this archway. Image by Ruth Gilmour.
What better way to show off your creative flair than the garden. Nature is full of inspiration, both with complimentary colours as well as contrasting hues, and they all work in harmony together. There are no rules. Match your furniture, archway or garden art to your favourite flower, or go for a striking contrast amongst the blooms and greenery. Try vibrant colours like Resene Home Run, Resene Portage, Resene New York Pink and Resene Havoc.
Tip:When painting statement features and furniture, it’s best to use a lower sheen finish to help hide surface imperfections. Use Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen for everything from walls, fences, decks and furniture. Or for a more matte finish use Resene Lumbersider Matt.
